Day 1: Arusha (1400 m) – Marangu Gate (1,980 m) – Mandara Hut (2700 m)

Walking approx. 12 km in 5 hours over montane forest and low alpine zone (moorland).

After breakfast at your lodge in Arusha, we will pick you up and drive to Marangu gate via Moshi town, passing villages and local farms. Upon arrival, you will register at the park office while your guide handles the formalities. Porters will carry supplies (max 20 kg each), and you will carry your personal items. The hike to Mandara Hut (2700 m) passes through mountain forest, streams, and waterfalls, reaching Kisamboni picnic area after 1.5 hours for lunch. Another 1.5-hour hike leads to Mandara Hut, situated in the moorland zone.

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2700 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Walking approx. 15 km, hiking for 6 hours (moorland zone).

After breakfast, the hike continues past the Maundi Crater, leading into the moorland zone with heather and lobelia. On clear days, you will have great views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Horombo Hut (3,720 m) is reached in the afternoon. Here, nights tend to be cold, so prepare accordingly.

Day 3: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Kibo Hut (4,700 m)

Walking approx. 15 km in 6 hours (Alpine desert).

The trail leads through the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. The recommended lower route passes the last water point at 4,200 m. After lunch, you continue to Kibo Hut (4,700 m), where you rest before the summit attempt.

Day 4: Summit Attempt: Kibo Hut (4,700 m) – Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Horombo Hut (3,720 m)

Walking approx. 6 km ascent and 21 km descent in 8 hours (rocky, ice-capped summit).

The final ascent starts around midnight, requiring thermal gear and headlamps. Key stops include William’s Point (5,000 m), Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 m), and Gillman’s Point (5,681 m). The final push passes Stella Point (5,752 m) before reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After a brief stop for photos, descend to Kibo Hut for lunch, then continue to Horombo Hut (3,720 m) for overnight.

Day 5: Horombo Hut (3,720 m) – Marangu Gate (1,980 m) – Drive to Arusha

Walking approx. 27 km in 6 hours across low alpine zone, moorland, and montane forest.

After breakfast, descend past Mandara Hut (2,700 m) for a rest stop before reaching Marangu Gate. After signing out, you will receive a summit certificate: Green for Gilman’s Point and Gold for Uhuru Peak. Meet your driver for transfer to Arusha or the airport.
